The studies assembled in this volume examine the importance of the Chinese chair of the School of Oriental Languages (L'École des langues orientales) in the general plan of sinology and of orientalism over the first century of its existence. Lively portraits are given of the successive chairs of the Chinese department, as well as of those who have been called the “indigenous coaches.” The text leads an in-depth reflection on different pedagogical methods and on the manner in which the career of each chair was affected by different hazards over the years. A reference book.
